THE COUNTRY OF A THOUSAND HILLS

RWANDA

The country of a thousand hills is Africa’s most forward-thinking and positive nation. A devastating political history has now transformed the country into a success story that is attracting visitors from all over the world.

It is Africa’s most accessible gorilla trekking destination from the capital of Kigali. Guests are just a few hours away from Volcanoes National Park, where Dian Fossey completed 20 years of in-depth study on the habituation of wild gorilla families. It was on these bamboo-covered slopes that “Gorillas in the Mist” was filmed. Today, small groups of privileged guests are able to enter this pristine forest and walk among these incredible creatures.

The main attraction of gorilla trekking takes place in the north-western corner of the country in a volcanic region called the Virungas. This is easily combined with chimpanzee viewing, along with over 12 other primates and over 300 bird species.

Being a relatively small country, it is easy to combine this with other African countries like Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya to add diversity to any intimate safari vacation.

BISATE

Bisate Lodge is adjacent to Volcanoes National Park and combines the bucket-list gorilla trek with a pioneering vision of reforestation and community partnership.

Bisate is located in the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone with dramatic views of the peaks of the Bisoke and Karisimbi volcanoes rearing up through Afro-alpine forests. Encountering one of the gorilla groups in the nearby Volcanoes National Park is a unique experience that cannot be described using words. Many of our guests state that this is the best safari experience they have ever had.

Six opulent en-suite forest villas maximise comfort and views, whilst adhering to environmentally-responsible principles and celebrating the rich culture of rural Rwanda. Bisate is within an easy driving distance of the park’s headquarters. From here, gorilla treks depart daily. Guests can also enjoy walks on Bisate’s property that offer birding and participation in their reforestation programme.

SINGITA KWITONDA

Designed with respect of its remarkable location, Singita Kwitonda Lodge has been built in response to the natural geology of the site. With sustainability as a fundamental design focus, it treads lightly on the land and offers an intimate engagement with the landscape and a sense of solitude within nature.

A stay at Singita Kwitonda Lodge affords guests the unique opportunity to encounter one of Africa’s most majestic creatures in the wild, while immersed in the beauty of their pristine natural habitat. The lodge provides a contemplative, nurturing space in which to appreciate the transformative experience of coming face to face with the forest’s gentle giants.

Singita Kwitonda Lodge and Kataza House stand as a benchmark for environmentally-conscious hospitality, promising to exceed all expectations of the modern traveller looking for transformative, purpose-driven safari experiences.

SABYINYO SILVERBACK LODGE

The beautiful Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge lies hidden amongst the foothills of the spectacular Virungas. This is a chain of volcanoes that lie in what is thought to be the heart of the legendary land of King Solomon’s mines. Surrounded by the tropical forests of Rwanda, guests can unwind in their choice of stone cottage or suites, each with a large sitting room, fireplace, stylish en-suite bathroom and private veranda. The stone buildings feature traditional terracotta-tiled roofs and polished wooden floors.

Nearby adventures include hikes into the Parc National des Volcans in search of the majestic mountain gorilla and the enchanting golden monkey. Guests can also enjoy cultural excursions, bird watching, mountain biking trails and visits to a multitude of scenic destinations.

VIRUNGA LODGE

Set on a stunning hillside, the magnificent Virunga Lodge boasts panoramic vistas of the Virunga Volcanoes and the beautiful lakes of Ruhondo and Bulera. All ten luxury bandas are named after Rwandan lakes and features a spacious bedroom, a cosy fireplace and a private terrace with sweeping views of the spectacular surrounds.

Those in need of relaxation can revel in the comfort of the main lodge or spend some time in the Dian Fossey Map Room. Each guest will enjoy the chance to unwind with a relaxing complementary massage.
